The Best Guitar Picks for Beginners

What Kind of Guitar Pick/Plectrum Should You Use?

In this lesson, we’re going to get picky about our picks! There are so many kinds, and to help you figure it all out, I’ve broken it down. I want to help you find the best guitar picks for beginners!

There are 3 main variables when it comes to choosing a guitar pick:

  1. Thickness
  2. Size/shape
  3. Material (tone, durability, feel)

When you’re first getting started, I recommend a thinner pick, standard size/shape, made of nylon, cellulose or delrin.

If you’re not sure exactly what to get. These variety packs have pretty much everything in them. You can try a whole bunch of picks, for a very affordable price. (Purchase through Amazon: USA / Canada.)

If you want to play some leads, I recommend the same pick I use. Dunlop Tortex .88mm (the green ones). I like the powdery feel, they’re thick enough to have control when playing leads and thin enough to get a nice, bright strumming sound.
