1. I Walk the Line

This Johnny Cash classic runs on just three chords – E, A and B7 – plus a country boom-chuck strum. The B7 trips a lot of beginners up, so I teach an easy pivot: keep your middle finger planted from the E chord and teeter-totter your index and ring fingers into a little triangle, then add your pinky.

For the rhythm, I keep it to four steady downstrokes with a softer root strum on beat one. It’s a feel you’ll reuse on countless country and folk tunes.

2. Stand By Me

Stand By Me is essential campfire material, and it’s the same four-chord loop the whole way through: G, Em, C and D. I use what I call the two-finger trick, where you leave your ring and pinky planted and barely move your hand between chords.

This is one of the most common chord patterns in all of popular music, and it’s a perfect example of how much you can do with a song built on just a handful of chords. Learn this one shape and dozens of other tunes fall into place.

3. Riptide

Here’s a modern crowd-pleaser that uses only three chords – Am, G and C. I teach an easy way to move between them: from A minor, drop your ring and pinky to the third frets to land on G, then lower your ring finger to slide into C.

Because the switching is so smooth, you can put your energy into the strumming and those fun single-strum moments that give the song its drama.

4. Three Little Birds

This Bob Marley favorite is upbeat, easy to remember, and uses just three chords – E, A and D. A simple root-down strum works great, and if you stop the strings right after your downstroke on beat two you get a short, percussive sound that nails the feel.

It’s also a fun one to solo over – you can start a minor pentatonic scale on the second fret of the thickest string if a friend takes over the chords.

5. Creep

This one’s a bit of a downer, but it’s instantly recognizable and runs on the same four chords the entire way – G, B7, C and C minor. Instead of barring the C minor, I show a simpler version: come out of your C chord, shift it up a few frets, mute the outside strings, and you’ve got the same notes the easy way.

Strum down-down-up if it’s noisy, or pick out the notes when things quiet down for those big dramatic moments.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a huge repertoire to be the person who gets everyone singing – just a few easy songs and the confidence to start strumming. Try these five, lean on the little tricks, and the chord changes will start feeling automatic.
