Your First Guitar Lesson – Tune Up, Strum, and Play a Song in Minutes

Most people give up on guitar in the first week for two simple reasons – tuning feels confusing, and switching chords never seems to happen on time.

In this first lesson, I’m doing what I wish someone had done for me when I started.

I’ll show you:

  • The easiest way to get your guitar in tune
  • How to strum without sounding harsh or messy
  • How to play your very first real song
  • And how to switch chords smoothly, with good timing

All in just a few minutes.

Whether you’re brand new or dusting off a guitar you haven’t touched in years, this lesson will get you playing real music right away.

The Parts of the Guitar (Quick Basics)

Let’s start with the absolute basics.

An acoustic guitar has three main parts:

  • The head – where the tuning pegs are
  • The neck – with the fretboard, where you press down to play notes and chords
  • The body – where you strum

That’s all you need to know for now.

How to Tune Your Guitar (The Easy Way)

Every time you pick up your guitar, you should tune it.

Even the best player in the world will sound terrible if their guitar is out of tune.

I recommend using a clip-on tuner, but if you don’t have one, just search “tuner” in your phone’s app store and use your phone.

Here’s the simple process:

  1. Pluck a string
  2. The tuner tells you if the note is too low, too high, or just right
  3. If it’s too low, tighten the tuning peg
  4. Always make tightening your last motion so the tuning stays stable

You’ll tune the strings from thickest to thinnest:

E – A – D – G – B – E

We’ll repeat this over time, so don’t worry if it doesn’t stick right away.

Strumming Without the Harsh Sound

For strumming, I recommend starting with a thinner pick.

Around 0.5mm is perfect for most beginners.

A few key tips:

  • Let the pick come out sideways from your thumb
  • Hold it lightly
  • Think of the pick like a paintbrush brushing the strings

If you grip too tightly, you’ll get a rough, abrasive sound.

To practice, lightly touch the strings with your fretting hand so they don’t ring out. Then strum steady downstrokes while counting:

1, 2, 3, 4
1, 2, 3, 4

This builds solid rhythm right from day one.

Your First Chord (E Major)

Now let’s make some music.

We’ll start with an E chord.

A quick trick for remembering string names is this phrase:
Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big Ears

That gives us E, A, D, G, B, E.

Here’s how to build the chord:

  • Index finger: 1st fret of the G string
  • Middle finger: 2nd fret of the A string
  • Ring finger: 2nd fret of the D string

Press as close to the fret as possible (without touching the metal). This gives you better leverage and a cleaner sound.

Strum gently and don’t worry if it’s not perfect. Everyone sounds rough at first.

Switching Chords the Smart Way

Next, we’ll switch to an A chord.

Here’s the trick – move your middle and ring fingers together down one string, and leave your index finger down.

That pivot point helps you switch without staring at your hand.

Now you know two real chord shapes.

But the real skill is switching between them while keeping steady rhythm.

The Chord Switching Game (This Is the Secret)

This game is the key to smooth chord changes.

Start by counting:
1, 2, 3, 4

  • Strum on beat 1
  • Switch during beats 2, 3, and 4

Once that feels good:

  • Strum on beats 1 and 2
  • Switch on beats 3 and 4

Then:

  • Strum on beats 1, 2, and 3
  • Switch on beat 4

Finally:

  • Strum all four beats
  • Switch quickly in the gap

This is how you train your hands to switch in time, not just switch eventually.

Play Real Songs Right Away

With just:

  • E and A chords
  • Simple downstrokes
  • And steady counting

You can already start strumming along with real songs like (click for a full tutorial for each)

This is real guitar playing, not exercises that go nowhere.
