This week we have a very somber tune, “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” by Death Cab For Cutie. This is one of my favourite tunes of theirs.. very sweet and sad. The fingerpicking reminds me of something Elliott Smith might do – it’s halfway between fingerstyle and strumming, and is actually quite difficult to pull off correctly, but if you go through it slowly (as we do in the video) you’ll get it in no time! (By the way, you’ll need a capo on the 5th fret in order to play along to the original recording).

The chords are mostly simple ones (C, Am, F, G) and there are some substitute bass notes (Am/G, C/G) so take your time working out the shapes. We spend a good amount of time doing just that before moving on to the rhythm.

For the pattern, be sure to take your time getting a good sound on the “muted” strokes.. don’t get too fussy, but once you have the pattern comfortable (rhythmically) it’s a good idea to make sure the volume and tone is nice and even. This song is all about being delicate but firm with the rhythm – that’s what can make or break it.

I hope you have a good time learning (and playing this one) – try not to shed too many tears as you make your way through the chorus :\

See you next week!
James
