November Guitar Updates
James shares a short story about courage, comfort zones, and learning guitar – plus new lessons, student highlights, and what’s coming next.
🎸 A small stage, a big lesson
Halloween night was a big one — the kids finally made it around the block! Later, my wife and I saw a magician who used to play to thousands but now performs for just thirty people.
It reminded me how much courage it takes to start fresh — to do something smaller but more meaningful. That same night, my daughter faced her fear of fireworks and couldn’t stop smiling afterward.
Change is uncomfortable — whether it’s fireworks or a tricky new chord — but that’s where the good stuff happens.
What’s one thing you’ve been avoiding on guitar because it’s outside your comfort zone?

🌟 Member Spotlight: Ben Detrick
Ben’s guitar story began with a simple goal — to surprise his wife by playing “More Than Words.”
As a lifelong violinist and strings teacher, he turned to my lessons to fill in the gaps and soon found himself playing the whole thing confidently.

Since then, he’s started recording his own music, diving into the CAGED system, and rediscovering the joy of learning again.
“James has such a calm, realistic voice that makes you believe nothing is impossible. He just lays it out there – clear, direct, and encouraging. Within minutes you’re doing things you didn’t think you could.”
— Ben Detrick
His story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start something new and find inspiration through music.
