Hey everyone! In today’s lesson, I’m going to show you how to play “Only Wanna Be With You” by Hootie And The Blowfish. This classic, feel-good 90’s tune is one of the best tunes to bust out at parties.

Throughout the video I mention some of my resources, like my free eBook, barre chord course, and complete beginner’s course. These resources are designed to help you do it better and faster.

Beginner’s Course: https://goodguitarist.com/beginner-guitar-course
Barre Chord Course: https://goodguitarist.com/barre-chords

The lesson begins with a couple simple chords: D and A7sus4. They are both very simple and easy to switch between. We work out the switch, and then add some rhythm.

The strumming is the only challenging part of this tune, otherwise it’s a VERY easy guitar song. The rhythm is split over the D and A7sus4 chords, so we go over it in steps. I know how tough it can be to add a “switch” in the middle of a pattern, and I show you how to build the muscle memory for it.

After that, we start to build up the rest of the song. There’s just 2 more chords: Em and G. And the strumming is the same the whole time.

We practice each section, working out all the bits, and then at the end I show you how to write out a chord chart/TAB for yourself, that’ll help you navigate through this tune. It’s a short-hand version that real musicians use, and I want you to get used to this style, since it’s very easy to visualize.

Remember, listening to the recording = the #1 thing you can do for playing through the whole song. Take it slow, in steps, and you’ll get there!

All the best!
-James
