2 Quick Exercises to Improve Your Strumming (In Just Minutes a Day)
In this lesson, I’m going to show you two super simple strumming exercises you can do in just a couple of minutes a day. These are designed to tighten up your timing and, more importantly, help you develop a smooth, musical strumming sound.
If your strumming feels stiff, scratchy, or inconsistent, this is exactly where you want to start.
Exercise 1: Downstroke Control (Low Strings)
The first exercise focuses on your downstrokes and your overall motion.
Start by holding an E chord, but instead of strumming all the strings, just focus on the bottom two strings.
From there:
- Use downstrokes only
- Move your hand in a small oval or circular motion
- Start slow, then gradually increase your speed
- Stop speeding up once it feels uncomfortable
The goal is not speed – it’s smoothness and control.
What You Should Focus On
As you do this, pay attention to how your arm actually moves.
A lot of people think strumming comes from just the wrist or just the elbow, but it’s really a combination of:
- Forearm rotation (like turning a doorknob)
- A relaxed elbow moving slightly up and down
- A flexible wrist controlling how deep the pick hits the strings
When these work together, your strumming starts to feel effortless.
A Quick Tip for Better Sound
If your strumming sounds harsh:
- Try loosening your grip on the pick
- A tighter grip = louder, more aggressive sound
- A looser grip = softer, smoother sound
One of the easiest ways to improve tone is simply learning how to relax your hand.
Add Counting for Timing
Once the motion feels comfortable, add some basic counting:
- “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and”
This helps connect your movement to rhythm, which is essential for real music.
You can also use a metronome to lock things in. If you want to understand why this works so well, check out this explanation of Rhythm (music) – it’s the foundation of everything we do as guitar players.

Exercise 2: Upstroke Control (High Strings)
Now we take the exact same idea and flip it.
This time:
- Focus on the top 3 strings
- Use upstrokes only
- Keep that same circular motion, but reversed
You don’t even need to hold a chord shape here – those top strings naturally form an E minor sound.
Why This One Feels Harder
Upstrokes are naturally less comfortable than downstrokes, so expect this to feel a bit awkward at first.
But the same principles apply:
- Forearm rotation drives the motion
- Wrist controls contact with the strings
- Elbow helps keep everything loose
Tempo Tip
Your upstrokes will almost always be slower than your downstrokes.
If your downstrokes feel good at:
- 80 BPM
Try your upstrokes at:
- 50–60 BPM
That’s totally normal.
The Big Picture
Strumming is tricky because there are a lot of moving parts happening at once.
These exercises simplify everything so you can:
- Focus on motion
- Build coordination
- Develop a smooth sound
There’s no shortcut here – you just need to listen to yourself and make small adjustments as you go.
