Hey everyone!

In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to play “Say Something” by A Great Big World, featuring Christina Aguilera. This is a fairly slow and simple tune, so as long as you have a few basic chords down, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Special thanks to Eric Severinson and Carmina Bolinao for singing the intro.

If you find this song is a bit too tough, you might be interested in my complete beginner’s guitar course. It’s a step-by-step course that takes you through the entire process from absolute beginner to mastering the basics. The lesson begins with some chord shapes: Am, F, C and Gsus. Am and C are pretty simple and for F and Gsus we go over some easy ways to play them. Then we practice the chords, in order, using downstrokes only, just to smooth out the chord switching, before moving on to the strumming pattern.

The strumming pattern for the quiet parts of the song is just a downstroke, followed by plucking the 2nd string. It’s weird to explain via text, but in the video you’ll see just how simple it really is. Once we’ve gotten a hold of it, we put it together with the chord shapes and play through the verse/chorus.

The next part of the tutorial goes over the Bridge, which requires 1 new chord shape: Em. This part of the song requires a new strumming pattern, too: D r D Du. We break it all down and then try it together, slower than the original recording.

That’s it! Hope you enjoyed the lesson and I’ll see you soon!
