Why Guitar TAB Can Hold You Back (And What To Do Instead)

Guitar TAB is useful.

It tells you where to put your fingers.

That’s valuable.

But TAB has limits.

And if you rely on it too much, it can actually slow down your musical growth.

What TAB Does Well

TAB is great for learning notes quickly.

It gives you a map.

That’s especially useful for riffs and solos.

It removes guesswork.

What TAB Can’t Teach You

TAB does not teach:

  • feel
  • timing
  • dynamics
  • articulation
  • phrasing

And those are the things that make music sound like music.

Not just notes.

This is why standard music notation evolved with rhythmic values and dynamic markings. That history is tied to Music Theory.

Real Players Don’t Play the Same Thing Twice

Listen to live recordings from Brian May.

He doesn’t play his solos exactly like the record every time.

Not because he can’t.

Because music is alive.

Expression matters.

That’s something TAB can’t capture.

The Better Way: TAB + Ear

Don’t throw TAB away.

Use it differently.

Try this:

  1. Look at the first note
  2. Figure out the next few notes by ear
  3. Check the TAB
  4. Correct yourself
  5. Repeat

This builds your ear while still giving you support.

That’s the sweet spot.

Why Ear Training Matters

Ear training teaches you to hear patterns.

Recognize intervals.

Predict notes.

That’s real musical understanding.

It builds internal hearing – often called Audiation.

And that skill changes everything.

Final Thoughts

TAB is a tool.

Not a destination.

Use it to support your ear.

Not replace it.

That’s how you become musical.

Not mechanical.

If you want to build that skill faster, my All-Access Pass includes structured ear training, songs, and guided practice.

Have a fun time practicing and I’ll see you soon!
