Hey everyone!

In this lesson I’m going to teach you how to play “Too Much To Ask” by Niall Horan. It’s pretty simple, just some chords and strumming, so I believe it’s certainly suitable for beginners.

Intro sung (amazingly!) by my friend, Eric Severinson. Here’s a link to his music: https://youtu.be/c9xvBwHDhqQ

Throughout the lesson I mention eBook (which is free for all my subscribers). If you need help with chord shapes, chord switching, rhythm… pretty much all the basics, you should definitely check it out. https://goodguitarist.com/learn-rhythm-guitar/

And if you’re interested in learning to play the F barre chord, this video series might help! – https://goodguitarist.com/basic-barre-chords/

The lesson begins with the verse. We need 3 chord shapes to play this part: Am, G and C. We practice playing them, in order, with downstrokes only.

Next we learn a strumming pattern. “Down Root Down Down-up” – it’s one of the simpler ones. We break it down and count it out just in case you need some extra help with it, and then we put it together with the chords from the verse and play through it all together.

The prechorus requires 1 new chord shape: Dm. We then practice the chord order and play the pre-chorus together, with the strumming pattern.

Finally, we take a look at the chorus, which requires the F chord. I show you 2 ways to play it: the harder way (using a barre-chord shape) and an easy way (using what I call the “4 finger grip”).

That’s all there is to it! Hope you enjoy the lesson and I’ll see you next time!
-James
