I got so many requests for this that I just HAD to make this video, so here it is! Ed Sheeran’s guitar solo from his 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud.”

Throughout the lesson, we use a variety of lead guitar techniques. If you need extra help getting them to sound good, I recommend checking out my lead guitar eBook. It’s free for all of my subscribers, you can get your copy here: https://goodguitarist.com/learn-lead-guitar/

The lesson begins with a quick discussion about guitar tone. For the recording, it sounds like they used a large tube amp (like a Fender Twin or Super) and just cranked it (REALLY LOUD) to get some natural gain. You probably don’t live in a sound-proof studio, so blasting the volume is most likely not an option, so in order to approximate this tone we can just add a little bit of gain.

The rest of the lesson follows a straight-forward format. I break the solo up into many small bits, and then I: demonstrate at full speed, break it down, demonstrate it slowly. Then I move on to the next part, and the next.

At the very end of the lesson (10:52) is a full play-along, slowed down to half speed. I recommend watching this a few times to get the feel for the solo, and then trying to play along yourself!

I hope you enjoyed this lesson, and I’ll see you soon!
-James
