First I want to talk about why we learn barre chords. The answer is pretty straightforward: it lets us play chords in any key, anywhere on the fretboard. It’s the gateway into the CAGED system. And it really is an incredible tool for any guitarist.

The problem with barre chords though, is they require a perfect balance of technique and finger strength. A lot of people try them, realize how hard they are at first, and they don’t carry on long enough to hit the point where they can play barre chords more easily.

To help, I’ve developed an alternative approach that uses a different shape, the power cord. This shape is actually at the foundation of the bar chord, so it requires you to do all the same things: it puts your hand in the same position, it’s movable along the fretboard and… basically it’s the easiest barre chord that there is!

I’m going to teach you how to play this shape and a few variations that will let you build this shape into a bar chord by just adding one finger at a time. Then we’ll review everything by practicing a switch from one of the basic chord shapes into our power chord and then evolving that transition from our basic chord into a barre chord.
