21 Most Common Guitar Questions Answered (Beginner to Intermediate)
I answer the 21 most common guitar questions – from choosing acoustic vs electric, to practicing, chords, strumming, barre chords, fingerpicking, scales, and staying motivated.
Hey, it’s James here from goodguitarist.com. I’ve been teaching guitar for over 15 years, and I’ve had this channel going for more than a decade. In that time, I’ve received thousands of questions from guitarists just like you.
In this lesson, I’ve collected the 21 most common guitar questions and answered them all in one place. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to move forward, you’ll find practical tips here that you can use right away.
Getting Started
1. What kind of guitar should I buy—acoustic or electric?
It depends on what you want to play. If you just want to strum some chords by the campfire, go acoustic. If you want to rock out or play lead, go electric. Look at the kind of guitar your favorite artists use—that’s usually the best choice for you.
2. Do I need to learn music theory?
No, but it definitely helps. A little bit of theory (as easy as grade two math) will amplify what you can do on guitar.
3. How often should I practice, and for how long?
- Beginners: 10–15 minutes a day, six days a week.
- Intermediates: 30–60 minutes a day.
- Serious players: Around 2 hours daily.
Consistency is more important than marathon sessions.
4. Are my fingers supposed to hurt?
Yes, at first. Your fingertips will toughen up with time. Just make sure you’re holding the guitar properly to avoid long-term pain.
5. Can I learn guitar if I’m too old?
Absolutely! I’ve had students start at 80 years old and succeed. It’s never too late.
Chords and Playing Songs
6. Why do my chords sound buzzy or muted?
Follow these four steps:
- Press close to the fret
- Arch your fingers
- Keep your thumb in a good spot
- Press down hard enough
7. How do I switch chords faster?
Practice the “chord switching game”: switch silently, then add simple rhythm (downstrokes only).
8. What are the easiest songs to learn?
Check out my Song Finder. Some great beginner picks:
9. Do I need to memorize all the chord shapes?
No. Focus on building muscle memory through switching chords in real songs.
10. Why do barre chords seem impossible?
They’re tough at first, but if you start with power chords and build up gradually, they become manageable.
Strumming and Rhythm
11. How do I strum without sounding sloppy?
Keep it simple: practice four downstrokes with a metronome, or along with real songs.
12. How do I stay in time?
Use downstrokes with songs, then add a metronome. Focus on listening to the click more than yourself.
13. How do I know whether to use downstrokes or upstrokes?
Downstrokes on the numbers (1, 2, 3, 4), upstrokes on the “ands.”
14. How do I know which strumming pattern to use?
There’s no single “correct” pattern. It’s about capturing the groove of the song. I go deeper on this in my Strumming Made Simple course.
Going Beyond Chords and Strumming
15. What’s the best way to start fingerpicking?
Take a song you already know and turn it into fingerpicking. Start with simple patterns.
16. How do I read tablature? Do I need to?
Yes—it’s simple and useful. Lines are strings, numbers are frets. I have a video that explains it in 5 minutes.
17. What is a scale, and why learn them?
A scale is just a group of notes that sound good together. They’re useful for building chords, melodies, and solos. Start with the minor pentatonic.
18. How do I start improvising or soloing?
Use just a few notes from a scale over a backing track. Focus on rhythm first.
Mindset and Motivation
19. How long will it take me to get good?
It depends on your definition of “good.” For some, strumming and singing is enough. For others, even gigging regularly still feels like “not there yet.”
20. What’s the best way to stay motivated?
Tie guitar into your life—record yourself, set mini projects, and make it fun.
21. Is YouTube enough, or should I take lessons?
YouTube is great, but it’s not structured. That’s why I created my All-Access Pass—a step-by-step path with structure, bonuses, and direct help from me.
That’s all 21 questions! I hope you found this helpful. If you have more questions, leave them in the comments on YouTube and I’ll do my best to answer them.
Have a fun time practicing and I’ll see you soon!
