In this lesson we’re doing something a little different—a quick quiz to assess your guitar skills.
This isn’t about ranking people or making anyone feel bad. It’s just a fun way to see where you’re at and figure out what to work on next. Be honest with yourself, and remember—even if you get some wrong, it doesn’t matter. Every single thing here is teachable.
Level 1 – Beginner
1. Chord Recognition
Can you identify the chords just by watching?
2. Counting Along to Music
Can you find beat 1 and keep a consistent count through a song?
3. Higher or Lower Note
Which note sounds higher?
4. Swing vs Straight
Which strumming feel sounds more “bluesy”?
5. Twinkle Twinkle – Which Chords Are Correct?
Level 2 – Late Beginner
1. Quick Chord Switches
Can you switch between chords like C, A, G, E, D, Am, Em, Dm in 1 second or less?
2. Strumming with a Metronome
Try looping these patterns in time:
- D Du uDu
- D r D Du
- R D -uDu
3. Major vs Minor Progression
Which progression sounds major and which sounds minor?
- Am, C, G, F
- C, G, Am, F
4. “Home” Chord Test
With C, G, Am, F… which ending feels more like home?
- Ending on G
- Ending on C
5. In Time or Rushed?
Which version is steady with the metronome?
Level 3 – Intermediate
1. Barre Chords
Can you play the full F major and B minor barre chord shapes?
2. Triads Over G
With a G chord in the background, which triad fits better?
3. Minor Pentatonic Scale
Can you play it up and down with alternate picking?
Follow-up: Can you add hammer-ons and pull-offs?
