Simple Guitar Tricks That Sound Amazing (Even for Beginners)
Learn how to impress with simple guitar shapes, picking patterns, and cool sounds – even if you’re a beginner. These easy tricks sound pro with minimal effort.
I don’t know about you, but when I was just starting out on guitar, I remember being at a party where a guitar was sitting in the corner. And I felt torn.
On one hand, I wanted to pick it up and play something cool. On the other hand, I was afraid I’d start strumming something boring and lose the moment.
So today, I want to give you some really cool, really simple things to play – the kind of stuff that’ll give you the confidence to just pick up the guitar and go for it.
You can learn all of this in the early stages of guitar. But there’s also room to grow – you can take these ideas and build them into your own thing.
Trick #1: The Asus2 Drag
This one’s based on one of the first chords I teach people – Asus2. You just keep your fingers in the same shape and drag it up and down the fretboard.
Musically? You’re playing a major 7 chord, followed by a key change to the parallel minor, finishing on a subdominant cadence…
But don’t worry about any of that! You’re literally just dragging one shape and it sounds super cool.
Trick #2: Fingerstyle Variations
For this one, I’m using fingerpicking to bring out some extra color. Just follow the patterns I show you in the video. Or, use this simple rule:
- Start with the lowest note on beat 1
- Randomize the rest!
It’s really flexible, and you can explore a bunch of variations.
Trick #3: One note and 2 open strings
This one’s a vibe. I show you a few notes that work well together – but really, the fun part is making up your own combinations. Try the examples from the video, and then explore!
You don’t need to overthink it. Just start with a shape, slide it around, and pick the notes that sound good to you.
Wrap-Up: Make the Moment Happen
So next time you’re at a party and see a guitar in the corner, remember this simple formula:
Shape + Slide + Picking = Magic
You don’t need to be a virtuoso to sound good. Just pick one of these tricks, play it with intention, and let it speak.
