The Trick to Master Your Guitar Timing
I want to address a common issue that many guitarists face.
Imagine this scenario: You’ve been playing guitar for a while. You know your chords, you’ve practiced your strumming pattern from a popular song like “Hotel California” but something still doesn’t sound right. You think, “I must be missing something in the chords or the technique!”
Here’s the kicker: Even though you’re strumming in the right sequence, it’s not happening in the right place.
The Importance of Timing
Strumming isn’t just about downstrokes and upstrokes in the correct order. It’s about getting them in the precise timing within each measure. This is where many players struggle.
Understanding the Beat
To understand timing, let’s break down the role of a metronome. The metronome clicks on the beat, which is the part you count: 1-2-3-4. Each click aligns with those numbers, forming what we refer to as “the beat.”
Now, if you only played on the beat, music would be monotonous. To make things interesting, we play off the beat. The simplest way to do this is by playing halfway between each beat, known as an 8th-note pattern. (Note: you can take it further experimenting with more complex timings, but let’s keep things simple for now.)
The trick to mastering these variations is understanding and practicing the foundational timing of your strumming patterns. Once you have that, playing both on and off the beat becomes second nature.
