Why You Fall Behind the Beat on Guitar

Why You Fall Behind the Beat on Guitar

If you ever feel “a step late” when playing along to songs, you’re probably getting tripped up by a rhythmic push. A push is when a chord (or note) arrives just before the beat. In this lesson, I show you what it is, how it feels, and a simple drill that makes it second nature.

What Is a Rhythmic Push?

Usually, we expect chord changes to land on beat 1. A rhythmic push anticipates that change so it arrives early – on the “and” right before the next beat. It’s subtle, but it changes the whole feel.

Example – No Woman, No Cry
Progression: C G Am F
The push happens from Am to F. Instead of switching to F on beat 1, you switch early on the “and” of 4.

Step‑By‑Step: How I Practice the Push

We’ll isolate the tricky spot so your hands and ears lock it in.

  1. Set a steady count
    Count 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + out loud while lightly strumming.
  2. Play it “normal” first
  • Am for 4 full beats
  • Switch to F on beat 1
Do a few clean, relaxed reps.
  1. Add the push
  • Am for 3 beats and the 4
  • Switch to F on the “+” of 4
    Keep counting out loud: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + (F lands on that final +).
  1. Loop just the move
Alternate Am → F with the push for 8–12 reps. Stay relaxed. If it feels like rushing, slow the count and exaggerate the “+”.
  2. Rebuild the full progression
Drop it back into C G Am F, keeping the Am → F push consistent every cycle.

Tip: Let the pushed chord breathe. If you’re strumming 8ths, simplify the strums right before and right after the push so the anticipation is clear and intentional.

Songs You Can Use To Feel Pushes

Why This Matters

Once you can hear and feel pushes, you’ll stop getting derailed mid‑song. Your groove gets tighter, you recover faster, and you’ll recognize the trick instantly when it shows up in other tunes.
