Hey everyone!

In this tutorial, we’re going to learn to play “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” by Michael Jackson. If you listen to the recording, you’ll hear a plethora of instruments, all perfectly grooving together. From all of this, I’ve pulled out 2 parts that I think would be great to learn on guitar: the bassline, and a rhythm guitar part.

We’ll start out with the bassline. This is a very simple lead part, consisting of only 3 notes. The tricky bit is the rhythm, so I demonstrate the order of the notes and spend a LOT of time going over the rhythm. Once we’ve gone through that, we practice playing it together at 50% speed (pretty darn slow!)

Next up, we learn how to strum along with this song. It uses just 2 chords: E and D. If you need extra help with them, please check out the aforementioned rhythm guitar eBook.

And for the strumming pattern, there are 2 that we can use. There’s the most common pattern ever: https://youtu.be/y36X-j3EqME

Or we use the exact same rhythm as the bass line part, but instead of pickin notes, we’re doing downstrokes and upstrokes.

This song is deceptively complex, even though the lead part is made of 3 notes and there are just 2 chords, I’m sure it will challenge you!

Till next time!
James
