If you haven’t signed up for my free eBook, covering all the basics of rhythm & strumming, click here to get your copy.

Here’s a quick rundown of the method that will take you from “absolute beginner” to “someone who can strum a tune:”

  1. Pick an easy song (see easy song list below)
  2. Practice the chord shapes and chord switching
  3. Practice some strumming
  4. Put it all together
  5. Play a song!

Step 1 – Choose A Song

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

Our goal is to learn to strum some tunes, right? The song guides us, telling us what chords and strumming pattern we should learn. I recommend starting with a 2 chord song.

2-Chord Songs

Songs Using: D G A

Songs Using: G C D

Songs Using: A D E

Songs Using: G Em C

Other 3-Chord Songs

Step 2 – Practice JUST The Shapes You Need

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

In the eBook, on page 17, we use “Lively Up Yourself” as an example, which requires G and D.

There are 10 basic chord shapes in total (C, A, G, E, D, Am, Em, Dm, F, B7). I’ve included chord diagrams as well as images from many angles so you can see exactly how to place your fingers. Also, the troubleshooting steps on page 5 will be invaluable as you learn to grasp these chord shapes with ease.

Skip to 5:24 (in the Quick Start video at the top of this page) to learn the D chord. Go to 7:50 for the G chord.

Step 3 – Work On Some Rhythm & Strumming

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

On pages 13, 14 and 15, you’ll find 3 of the most useful strumming patterns. You can learn Pattern #2 from the Quick Start video (found at the 14:42 mark).

I’ve also included a short lesson on rhythm and continuous arm motion (a concept that’ll turn your strumming arm into a built-in metronome!).

I’ve noticed in my 1-on-1 teaching, that some people need more help than others with this sort of thing. I designed a course with those people in mind. If you find that this stuff just isn’t coming together, I want you to take a look at my Complete Beginner’s Course and see if it’s right for you.

Step 4 – Put It All Together

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

Once we’ve got all the components ready, the only step left is to put it all together. Rather than jump right in and try to switch chords, count out the beats and strum all at the same time, let’s just keep it simple and work it out bit-by-bit.

You can practice this along with me, at the 23:37 point of the Quick Start guide.

Step 5 – Try The Song!

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

Now, even if you don’t feel ready, I think it’s good practice to give this a shot anyway… no big deal if it doesn’t work out. You might have to go through this process a few times before you’re successful – but I guarantee you, if you stick with it, you will definitely get it!

Click on one of the songs from Step 1 (above) and try one of the song tutorials that uses G and D (“Lively Up Yourself” or “What I Got”).

[/fusion_text][fusion_separator style_type=”shadow” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” sep_color=”” top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”center” /][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container][fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”no” hundred_percent_height=”no” hundred_percent_height_scroll=”no” hundred_percent_height_center_content=”yes” equal_height_columns=”no” menu_anchor=”essential-chords” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” fade=”no” background_parallax=”none” enable_mobile=”no” parallax_speed=”0.3″ video_mp4=”” video_webm=”” video_ogv=”” video_url=”” video_aspect_ratio=”16:9″ video_loop=”yes” video_mute=”yes” video_preview_image=”” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=””][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=”” min_height=””][fusion_title margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” size=”2″ content_align=”center” style_type=”none” sep_color=””]

How Did It Go?

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

From this point, all you need to do is repeat this process. Choose a different song, use the eBook to help you learn the chords and strumming required for it, and quickly build a repertoire of simple strummers!

If you like to be a bit more thorough, and take some more time working through the chords and strumming, I have a Complete Beginner’s Course.

It’s designed to help those who struggle with the basics to “catch up” no matter what age, how short their fingers, or any other issue that has stopped them from succeeding in the past! More info on that here.

If you are happy with the method that we just used in this Quick Start Guide, I have an Interactive eBook that’ll guide you through this process with more chords, switching and strumming patterns. More info on that here.
