Hi everyone! In today’s lesson, I’m going to show you how to play “Dancing On My Own” by Calum Scott (originally by Robyn). This is a simple 4-chord song that uses a very common strumming pattern and there aren’t too many tricky bits through the whole thing.

Special thanks to Eric Severinson (https://youtu.be/c9xvBwHDhqQ) for singing the intro – he absolutely SLAYED this one!

If you need any help with the basics (chords, switching, strumming, etc.) please check out our eBook, covering all the basics of rhythm guitar. It’s free for subscribers and you can find it here: https://goodguitarist.com/learn-rhythm-guitar/

The lesson starts with the chord shapes needed for the verse: C, G, Fsus2. They’re all pretty simple. We practice switching through them all, and then take a look at the strumming pattern, which goes “Down Down-up up-down-up” (D Du-uDu). It’s the most common strumming pattern ever (Pattern #2 in our eBook if you need more help). After that we put the chords and pattern together, and play the verse, slower than the recording.

Next, we show you the pre-chorus and chorus, which are almost identical to the verse. They require 1 new chord: Am. There’s a tricky (not that tricky) part JUST before the 2nd chorus, so we show you how to get through that (with a little bit of counting). Afterwards, we play those parts together, with the strumming pattern.

Finally, we take a look at the bridge, which has a different pattern than the rest of the song. It’s just 1 strum, and then you count “2, 3, 4” in your head, before switching to the next chord. It’s REALLY easy!

All-in-all, this is one of the simpler guitar lessons, and I hope you enjoy it!
-James
