My super easy version of this 3 chord song on guitar uses the exact same progression for most of it, and then has a simple 2-finger riff for the other part. This may be a pop tune, but it is an excellent gateway into learning the Motown/funk style on acoustic guitar and learn to play bass lines on guitar.

The lesson begins with three easy chord shapes: C, Am, F. This chord progression is really simple because you can leave your first finger down the entire time making all the switches a lot easier to manage. We practice the chord progression, which is the same for the entire song, and then we add our strumming pattern.
The strumming pattern for this one is a bit longer but we break it down and make it as simple as possible, focusing on the counting so that we can feel the rhythm! We put the chords and strumming together and that gives us the majority of the tune.
The pre chorus uses an easy two finger riff so instead of playing it with all these crazy slash chords and difficult barre chords, we’re going to do the baseline. It fits really well since the energy of the song does go down at this point. I feel not only is this riff easier to play, it’s also a better fit for the song.
We practice the pre chorus breaking it all down and playing it together and then we discuss how to put the entire song together from start to finish.
