Hey everyone! In this lesson we show you how to play “Give Me Love” by Ed Sheeran. This song seems pretty easy, but once you scratch the surface, it’s full of a bunch of cool techniques (palm muting, hammer-on’s, mixing of chords and melody, little bit of bass-line stuff, etc).
The chords are simple for the most part. During the verse we use Am, F, and C. And for the F chord we give you a much easier alternative that doesn’t involve any of that pesky barre stuff! For the pre-chorus, we add the Dm and G/B chords. And for the chorus we add the Am/G chord. These are all fairly easy to play and with a bit of work you’ll have them down in no time.
The strumming pattern for this song is pretty simple – but it’s in 6/8 time (or 3/4, depending on how you count it out).
Now this song does involve some lead elements – the intro has a simple 3-note riff and the end of the chorus contains a simple bass-line/melody that is perfect for beginners.
Where this song starts to get a bit complicated is the bridge. It’s not hard to play in a simple way, but if you want it to sound exactly like the recording you’re definitely going to need to work on your palm-muting!
Overall I’d put this song at the beginner to intermediate level depending on whether or not you include all the little extras (hammer-ons, etc). And as long as you practice hard, you’ll end up playing it exactly like the recording.
