Hey everyone! This week we have a request by Mitch P. He wants to know how to play “Malibu” by Miley Cyrus and since it’s 30 degrees outside (86 Fahrenheit) I think it’s the perfect time to learn a song about summer 🙂

I decided to arrange this for fingerstyle (just because!) and I’d say this one is beginner/intermediate level. The chords are pretty easy and there aren’t too many (G, Gsus4, C, Bm7, Em, Am.. no barre chords). We go through them, one by one, working out the switches and I show you an easy way to go between G and Gsus4 (they’re almost the same chord that way).

Next we go over a “strumming” pattern. I put that in quotes because it’s sorta halfway between fingerstyle and strumming. We count it out, work on getting the right sound, and then combine it with the chords and play through the verse.

For the chorus we go all out fingerstyle, so I work out the pattern slowly, step by step, and play it a few times over each chord in order to get used to the “feel” of it. The good thing about the chorus is the fact that it just repeats the same 4 chords over and over which lets you save your focus for the pattern.

I hope you enjoy the tune and I’ll see you next week!
James
